Enumclaw athletes shine at state track meet

Track and field athletes from throughout the state converged upon Mount Tahoma High School May 23-25 to battle for top honors.

The Tacoma school hosted the state championship meet for the 4A, 3A and 2A classifications. Here’s the rundown for competitors from Enumclaw and White River high schools.

ENUMCLAW BOYS

Carson Christensen had qualified for state in two events and showed that he belonged among the state’s best. He placed second in the long jump with an effort of 23 feet, 3 inches and was fourth in the triple jump with a mark of 44-07.

Also with a second-place showing was the EHS 4×400 relay team after finishing with a time of 3 minutes, 24.46 seconds. Making up the team were Ricky Portillo, Royal Snyder, Anthony Russell and Kale Engebretsen.

Also competing for the EHS boys were Russell, who went 21-03 to place ninth in the long jump; Snyder, 13th in the 400 meters; and Bryson Engebretsen, 16th in the 110-meter hurdles.

In all, there were 48 teams scoring at least a point at state and the Enumclaw High boys placed ninth.

ENUMCLAW GIRLS

The best showing among the Enumclaw girls was delivered by the highly-touted 4×400 relay crew. The foursome placed second with a time of 4:01.28, having clocked an even faster time while winning their preliminary heat. Making up the team were Gracie Neu, Mia Ammons, Johanna Brown and Kayla Carlson.

The same foursome competed in the 4×200 relay and didn’t fare as well. Their time of 1:45.24 wasn’t enough to advance to the finals.
