Enumclaw swimmers, diver take part in state Class 4A competition

Five Enumclaw High swimmers joined the state’s elite last weekend for the Class 4A swim and dive championships.

The season-ending meet was, as usual, staged at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way. Competition started Friday and wrapped up Saturday, Feb. 22.

Leading the Hornet contingent was diver Ricky Bonthuis. He was sitting in fifth place following Friday’s preliminary round, dropped a notch to sixth following semifinal dives and wound up eighth following Saturday’s finals.

This year’s championships were the second for the EHS junior. Bonthuis placed 13th as a freshman and chose to wrestle as a sophomore before returning to the diving board this year.

Ben Jazbutis had qualified for the state meet in the 100-yard freestyle. He was seeded No. 21 heading into the championships and outperformed that ranking, eventually placing 16th.

Jazbutis also swam a leg in Enumclaw’s 4×100 relay team, joining teammates Jacob Hauswirth, Tanner Harms and Luke Perlot. That foursome also advanced through Friday’s prel... Click here to read full article
