Members of the Grove Boys Basketball team strive to give back to the community with service to others.

Coach Zack Trimble said his team makes it a point to take time every year to find a few community service projects to volunteer.

This last week, the team spent a few hours assisting a new business owner Josh Kerr in cleaning up his new store front Whoops Surplus.

The business, located in the former Mill Creek Lumber, on east Third Street in Grove.

Kerr has one other store in the Tulsa area and decided to return to Grove after having a hand in local business in the past.

“We just wanted to give back to the community anyway we could,” Trimble said. “The community does so much for us it’s the least we could do.

“Whoops Surplus needed some help and we wanted to help out a local business get ready for their grand opening.”

Whoops’ grand opening takes place on Saturday Sept. 23 . It will serve as a wholesale business with stock consisting of grocery items, some of which Kerr said cannot be found at other stores.

“We helped out a custodian who lost part of his home in a fire two years ago,” Trimble said. “We helped demo a lot of the inside and clean everything out.

“If more opportunities come up we will gladly assist if all possible.”

The team spent a few hours with Kerr sweeping up drywall dust and carrying pallets of trash out to dumpsters.

The whole team showed up, jumping at each opportunity presented to work.

It was apparent the students had a strong sense of team, fostered by Trimble, because not one of them stood around, instead finding another to help or relieving a teammate.

“It was my idea [for community service] and the boys were excited to help,” Trimble said. “Not one player was dreading it and all were pumped about helping.”
