MADISON — Scott opened its season by jumping ahead early and finished strong to earn a 42-14 victory against Herbert Hoover on Friday night.

The Skyhawks were able to use its bruising running game and a hard-nosed defensive performance to set the tone and pick up the win.

Led by fullback Carson McComas, the Skyhawks stayed on the ground for the majority of the game — gaining 436 yards on 49 carries, including 257 rushing yards in the first half.

Coming into the game, Scott coach Shann Elkins had hoped his team would be able to establish a solid ground game early against the Huskies.

“That’s our game, that’s what we do,” Elkins said. “This game and our performance tonight shows how hard our kids worked in the offseason to get ready for this. We want to go out and play like this every week, and this was a good way to start that off.”

The Skyhawks took two plays to get on the scoreboard in the first quarter — getting a 65-yard touchdown run from Connor White. Shortly after that, Scott’s defense started in relentless fashion, pushing Herbert Hoover deep into its own territory and forcing a punt attempt on fourth down. But the Huskies would snap it over the punter’s head out of the back of the end zone to push Scott’s early advantage to 8-0.

“The start we had was a big deal, especially against Hoover because that’s a team that will win some ball games,” Elkins said. “It made a big difference for us. Our kids have really bought into our game plan and they know what we want to do and tonight they executed well.”

McComas went to work from there for Scott. The sophomore finished the game with 239 yards and eclipsed the 100-yard mark on his second touchdown in the second quarter.

The fullback scored on runs of 13 and nine yards for the Skyhawks.

Scott was also able to force Herbert Hoover into several mistakes in that first half. The Huskies threw two interceptions in the first two quarters and ended the game being penalized 11 times for 75 yards — including six offsides calls.

“We told our kids that if we don’t execute and don’t do the things we were supposed to do, we could have been on the other end of it,” Elkins said. “That definitely played a factor today. If you can capitalize on the mistakes they make and limit your mistakes, that can be the game.”

Herbert Hoover broke through and got on the board late in the first half after Scott opened the game with 22 unanswered points. The Huskies were able to put together a long, sustained drive led by quarterback Rhett White that included a big fourth down conversion that kept the drive alive and allowed Ben Kee to plunge in for a 1-yard touchdown run with less than 30 seconds to play before halftime.

In the second half, it looked as if Hoover was ready to make it a game when White found Justin Stover in the back corner of the end zone for an 11-yard touchdown pass that made it an eight-point game. But Scott was able to use the two things that got it in front the entire game to put the contest away late.

The Skyhawks responded to the Huskies’ touchdown with a drive dominated by McComas and the running game and finished by another McComas touchdown run. Scott followed that with a defensive stand — forcing a fumble after Herbert Hoover was able to drive into the red zone — and a touchdown run from White to extend the lead even more and close the game with a comfortable margin.
