When the 2017 Oklahoma All-State Games commenced July 24-28 in Tulsa, Coweta Tiger golf coach Brenda Flanary was among the All State coaches. Flanary was chosen to coach the All-State East Team comprised of male and female golfers from schools in 3A through 6A classifications. Many of the competitors Flanary had seen before at tournaments throughout the season. During the All-State Golf Classic at Cherokee Hills in Catoosa, the East defeated the West 32-16. The tournament format included six holes of best ball, six holes of alternate shot and six holes of scramble. East players were teamed up with West players and they competed in groups of four. “It was an honor and a privilege to coach,” Flanary admitted. “It was fun to watch those young men and women finish out their high school careers on a high note. That’s the story they get to tell the rest of their lives – that they were All-State and won the All State games.” “The way they set the tournament up takes the pressure off the kids,” she continued. “They can go play golf their last time for fun. When we started on the first tee, I asked each group about their future plans and where they’re going to college. Many of them will carry on into college golf.” Flanary called the All-State Tournament probably “the least stressful and most enjoyable golf to watch.” “To see the joy on the kids’ faces when they did well … it’s a big bragging rights tournament – that’s what it comes down to,” she said with a smile. “It’s bragging rights to go out and say yeah, we’re on top!” Flanary has been coaching golf in Coweta for seven years, just completing her third year as head coach. The Tigers have made three consecutive State Tournament appearances under her leadership. Earlier this spring Flanary was named Region 3 Golf Coach of the Year. She definitely called coaching the All-State team a highlight of her coaching career. “The only thing that would have made it sweeter for me is if Lake (her son, who played golf with the Tigers and graduated in May) could have gotten in,” Flanary admitted. “He was a first-alternate, and to be a first-alternate in the state is quite an honor.” Flanary is the 15th Coweta coach to coach an All-State team. Former Lady Tiger volleyball coach Morgan McClanahan also coached this year. Previous CHS All-State coaches include Ronald McHenry, Bob Craig and Grover Wade, football; Ian Bullen, volleyball; Jerry Meek, Harold Meek, Tim Johnson, Shawn Gee and David Gilstrap, wrestling; Dave Willhite and Steve Lynch, softball and Scott Norris, basketball.
