Prior to Friday's game two start against Class 3A, No. 13 New Palestine, Conner Hasecuster had logged exactly three varsity innings on the mound for Shelbyville — in his career. After his performance against the Dragons, Hasecuster will be seeing more time away from his normal shortstop position. The University of Evansville recruit delivered six solid innings, allowing five hits and striking out 11 to lead Shelbyville to a 7-2 victory at Arthur Barnett Field, and a split of the Hoosier Heritage Conference doubleheader. Hasecuster learned Tuesday he would be making his first start against conference-rival New Palestine. And he looked forward to the opportunity.

"I wanted to shut them down offensively so we could get our offense going," said Hasecuster of his game plan after the win while sporting a big bag of ice on his right elbow. The junior helped himself in the top of the first inning with a single that moved leadoff hitter Drew Mathies to third. Colin Phelps then grounded into a double play but Mathies scored to make it 1-0.Hasecuster worked around a single and a walk in the bottom of the first and had a quick second inning to bring the Golden Bears back to the plate where he started a two-out rally.

Hasecuster drew a walk off New Palestine starter Andy Edwards. Phelps followed with a walk and John Lux plated Hasecuster with a single. Logan Young then smashed what turned out to be Edwards' final pitch of the night for another run-scoring single to make it 3-0.Braxton Savage greeted reliever Zachary Lovell with a third straight run-scoring single and the Golden Bears held a comfortable 4-0 lead.

A Keegan Watson double started Hasecuster's fifth inning on the mound. He scored on Jason Hall-Manley's single and Evan Hickman drew a walk. Hasecuster was then called for two balks that scored Hall-Manley and cut the Golden Bears' lead in half. But he struck out the next three Dragons to earn another inning of work.Shelbyville tacked on three runs in the top of the sixth with Mathies producing an RBI double and Phelps getting an RBI after getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Mathies crossed home plate on a wild pitch to make it 7-2.

Hasecuster needed just 11 pitches to get through the sixth inning and run his pitch count to 106. That proved to be more than enough."I wanted that last inning but coach (Scott) Hughes said it's been forever since I've thrown that many pitches," said Hasecuster. "So I understand where he was coming from. I have to play shortstop for this team. That's my role for this team."

Colin Phelps worked a scoreless seventh inning, getting help from Hasecuster completing a double play from his shortstop position, to close out the win.The last time Hasecuster started a game on the mound, he recalled, was in July in Georgia in a travel baseball game. He threw five shutout innings. So when does he believe he will start again?"Give me about three weeks," he said with a smile. "And then... maybe."

In game one, Savage took a second-inning line drive off his right leg then gutted out the next three innings before finally giving way to the bullpen.

New Palestine scored three times off the senior in the fifth to take a 6-5 lead but Savage lifted a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning to score Kyle Munger and tie the game.Jarett Posz, who closed out the fifth on the mound for Savage, gave up two hits, walked two and hit a batter in the sixth to propel the Dragons to a five-run inning. Game two, we played seven out of the seven innings pretty solid," said Hughes. "In game one, we played five out of the seven innings solid. We had those two down innings — the fifth and the sixth."\ And that resulted in Shelbyville splitting its third HHC doubleheader this season.

Hogan Fulkerson battled through five innings, allowing eight hits and six runs to earn the win for New Palestine (9-4). Edwards tossed two scoreless innings in relief before getting the game two start.Posz took the loss.Logan Young hit his second home run of the week for Shelbyville — a two-run shot in the third inning. With a DH sweep of Pendleton Heights Friday, 3A No. 10 Yorktown sits atop the HHC standings at 6-2.New Palestine follows at 5-3 with Shelbyville, Pendleton Heights, Greenfield-Central and Mount Vernon all tied at 3-3. New Castle is 3-5 and Delta is 2-6.

Shelbyville (6-5) hosts Mount Vernon (4-6) next Friday.
