The game temperature was hot, but the Tahlequah bats went cold.

A one-hit showing through the first six innings of Thursday's summer league game with Salina put the Tigers' varsity team in jeopardy of dropping its first contest in Three Rivers League play. But then Chace Krebs saved the day with one swing of the bat in the final frame.

With Salina leading 2-1 in the bottom of the seventh, Krebs smacked a liner in the left-center gap for an inside-the-park home run that scored two runs.

"When it came off the bat, I was thinking two at least," Krebs said of his game-winning hit. "I didn't know if I'd be able to score. But it worked out."

The two-RBI walk-off granted Tahlequah the 3-2 triumph to move to 7-0 in league play. Despite notching just two total hits in the game, the Tigers' defense managed to keep Salina within reach thanks to a noteworthy outing by starting pitcher Daniel King.

King pitched all seven frames in the game, tallying four strikeouts and just three walks. Salina recorded just two runs, both unearned, and four hits against the THS righty.

"Daniel threw a heck of a game," said first-year THS baseball head coach Matt Davis. "He kept us in it and the defense made plays behind him. He didn't really have much margin for error because we weren't swinging it real well, but he did what he had to do to give our offense a chance at the end."

The first score of the game came in the top of the second inning, when Salina plated two runners off two THS fielding errors. Tahlequah got on the board in the bottom of the third, with Zack Felts notching an RBI single to left-center to score Trenton Gunter from second base. However, Felts' hit was the last one the Tigers managed for the next three frames.

"Both of the arms [Salina] threw at us were good," Davis said. "Some of our kids, being young, were a little overmatched because it was the first time they'd seen arms like that. And when you have seven probable starters gone for their competitive stuff, you're going to have some rough spots in your batting lineup."

On Krebs' walk-off homer, Davis was the coach at third base who made the gutsy call to send Krebs home for the win.

"Right after it came off the bat, I was thinking that if they mis-played it all, we were going to take a chance," Davis said with a laugh. "With the way we were hitting, it wasn't a sure thing that we'd get another hit to bring him in from third."
