The Enumclaw High gymnastics team packed more hardware home from the state 3A gymnastics meet in Tacoma Friday and Saturday, hauling back their second-straight, second-place team finish, their third in five years.
The Hornets, who were crowned state champions in 2012 and 2013, were oh-so-close to making it a third. On Friday, Enumclaw finished just shy of the state title, earning 172.575 points to Kamiakin’s 174.650. They kept it close by winning the floor exercise, placing second in the vault and bars and taking third in the beam.
Junior Victoria Hernandez and senior Maddison Ward were the Hornets’ top finishers in Friday’s all-around competition tying for fifth. Emily Berte, a senior, placed 12th, with teammates BriAnna Reisinger, a sophomore, and Tianna Johnston, a junior, finishing 33rd and 34th respectively.
Ward was the Hornets’ top earner in the bars Friday, taking fourth with a score of 9.275. Hernandez was sixth with a 9.150. Ward also finished third in the beam with a 9.30; Berte was eighth with a 9.125.
Hernandez placed fourth, 9.550, in the floor and fifth, 9.375 in the vault. Ward was ninth in the floor with a 9.45.
Berte and Ward were EHS’s top finishers Saturday, finishing third and fourth in the beam. Hernandez was fourth in the vault, while Berte finished 12th. Hernandez and Berte were eighth and ninth in Saturday’s floor competition; Ward was 13th. In the bars, Hernandez came in 11th, while Ward posted a 14th-place finish.
