WIAA 3A State Championships

General Comments:

Hornets that qualified for the WIAA 3A State Championship Cross Country meet were greeted in the Tri-Cities this weekend by gorgeous sunshine and blue skies with temperatures approaching 60 degrees. The Girls team ran strong, finishing 12th overall in the competition, one spot up from last year. This is particularly notable considering the large number of seniors the girls team graduated last year and the fact that several young members of our varsity squad have never ran in a state-level competition before. On race day the athletes were surprised to see not only family members on the sidelines, but a large number of team members and alumni who made an extra effort to make the trip to Pasco. We feel fortunate to have the support of our families, friends, school and community…we could figuratively feel them at our backs while running the Sun Willows course…Thank You So Much!

Meet Highlights:

  • The Lady Hornets place 12th in the WIAA 3A Washington State XC Championships

  • Sam Engebretsen races to 20th place as an individual while posting a lifetime best time over 5000m.

  • Hunter Storm, Aleea Gwerder and Chayce Weiman cross the line in close proximity with times under 21 minutes, all breaking into the top 100 athletes, significantly boosting our overall team score.

  • Amanda Stenslie concludes her high school career in style with a very respectable time on the Sun Willows course

  • First time competitors Alexandra Puzon, Hunter Storm, Chayce Weiman and Bryn Zeman-Witzel gain valuable experience for the future.

  • The Girls team ran well enough to finish in front of Columbia River and Central Kitsap, two teams that edged us out at district, while narrowly missing finishing in front of district champions Prairie High School.

  • Eric Hamel runs to a strong finish in the top 100 athletes at the state meet.
