The Enumclaw High football team improved to 4-0 on the season – and won their North Puget Sound League opener in the process – with a Friday night victory over Auburn Mountainview.

The Hornets traveled to Auburn Memorial Stadium and rang up a 38-20 triumph over the Lions.

Most of the scoring fireworks came late, as the Hornets held just a 17-14 lead after three quarters of play. But a trio of fourth-quarter touchdowns, two coming in a span of 21 seconds, made all the difference.

Enumclaw had grabbed the lead thanks to a Ricky Portillo TD reception in the first quarter, a 28-yard field goal by Fulton Gunderson early in the second quarter and a 93-yard kickoff return by Jackson McCann shortly before halftime.

The Lions managed TDs of their own in the second and third quarters to set the stage for Enumclaw’s late-game heroics.

The Hornets’ game-changing, 14-point outburst started with a short TD burst by McCann. Just a couple of plays later a Mountainview receiver fumbled and the loose ball was scooped up by Royal Snyder, who scampered 22 yards to paydirt.

The Hornets’ final TD came on a completion from Cameron Brauer to Kaden Loop and Gunderson’s final PAT of the night made it 38-14 in Enumclaw’s favor. The Lions posted a late touchdown to polish off the game’s scoring.

Enumclaw’s offense was paced by McCann, who totaled 134 yards on 24 carries, and Brauer, who completed 11 of 13 passes for 144 yards.
