During a ceremony planned for the evening of Jan. 18, Hawk will be welcomed into the Enumclaw High School Athletic Hall of Fame. His induction will take place during halftime of the Hornet boys’ basketball game against Decatur High.
A South Sound native, Hawk eventually spent 48 years on the prep sidelines, coaching both football and basketball. Thirty-two of those years were spent at Enumclaw High.
While he made his mark in basketball, that’s not where he began his athletic endeavors. While a student at Clover Park High School, the only varsity sport he played was football, which he continued to play at Western Washington University. But Hawk knew he loved sports and wanted to get involved in the coaching end, so he became a serious student of both football and basketball and started his coaching career during his first year of teaching.
It was a decision that shaped his life for nearly half a decade.
During his first 17 years, Hawk was either the freshman or volunteer varsity assistant basketball coach as well as the defensive coordinator for the football team at Enumclaw High. Then, after Hall of Fame basketball coach Gary Radliff retired, Hawk took over the Hornet reins and had a hugely successful 15-year run. During that time, his teams amassed eight championships and made nine state tournament appearances with five state placings. He earned seven league coaching honors and, along the way, compiled a 276-95 record at Enumclaw.
Career highlights include third-place state finishes in both 1990 and 2002.
In 2002, Hawk and his family moved to the Vancouver, Wash., area where he coached the Battle Ground Tigers for four years. He then returned to the Plateau for a two-year stint at White River High, followed by coaching assignments at the Muckleshoot Tribal School and Tahoma High.
In recognition of his career accomplishments, Hawk was inducted in 2013 into the Washington Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame.
