BOYS SOCCER

Veteran coach Shawn Tobius is looking for a mix of veteran players and ninth-grade newcomers to lead the Hornets on the pitch this spring.

Key returnees include senior Nick Hoyer “who will look to anchor our defense,” Tobius said. Also counted on will be returning juniors Mikey King and Kyle Revell, along with sophomore Carsten Smits.

An added boost, the coach said, will be a pair of freshmen, Cameron Burkey and AJ King, who “will have an impact” on this year’s Hornet fortunes.

The rest of the varsity roster includes juniors Edgar Garnica, Eric Thompson, Halen Walker and José Aguilar; sophomores Nick Norton, Fulton Gunderson and Haidyn Fry; and freshmen Johan Pugmire, Alan Mejia and Luis Martinez.

Hoyer, King and Revell have been tabbed as team captains.

GIRLS TRACK AND FIELD

Returning talent is highlighted by senior distance runner Hunter Storm, who qualified in two events for last year’s state meet. In the Class 4A championships, she placed eighth in the 3,200 meters and 11th in the 1,600.

Also returning is senior Emmie Nue, who advanced to last season’s state meet and placed 13th in the high jump.

Sophomore Gracie Neu returns after being a part of a state-qualifying 4×400 relay team.

Other Hornet girls to watch for are Abbie Jo Carlson in the throws, javelin specialist Jessica Cerne and Payton Roberson in the 400 meters.

GIRLS WATER POLO

Coach Bob Averill can put plenty of experience in the water.

Boasting the most varsity time on the Enumclaw High squad are seniors Grace Munnell, Lindsay Harms and Grace Rich, along with juniors Tessa Valison and Kenzie Invie-Johnson.

The program is used to success and will be looking to keep the winning tradition intact. Last year’s squad won the East Division title and advanced, for the 13th consecutive season, to postseason play. The squad opened the season Saturday with the Emerald Ridge Jamboree, taking place at Rogers High School. The regular season opened Tuesday with a road trip to Kentridge; more road trips follow with a contest Thursday at Gig Harbor and Saturday at Auburn Mountainview.

BOYS TRACK AND FIELD

The top returning athlete is senior Connery McLaughlin, who placed second in the javelin during the 2017 state championships.

But he’s not the only familiar name on the roster. Others who have helped the EHS cause in the past are Bryson and Kale Engebretsen, versatile athletes found in the jumps, hurdles and pole vault; distance runners Alec Ritter and Sam Lingwall; and Carson Christensen and Anthony Russell in the jumps.

GIRLS TENNIS

It’s an experienced group that greeted veteran coach Rick Carel this spring.

Seniors with varsity experience include Mikyla Olsen, Anna Sanders, Camryn Hayett, Natalie Christensen and Taylor Thompson. Also with plenty of varsity court time is junior Emma McKeighen.

Carel and company opened the season Tuesday with a trip to Auburn Riverside and continue today, Wednesday, with a short jaunt to White River.
