Only a “hail Mary” touchdown pass – fortunately not of the winning variety – on the final play of the contest kept Rison from notching its second straight shutout of the season in last Friday night’s 40-6 non-conference win over the Lake Village Beavers, the first game played on the new artificial turf at George Walker Field of Champions.

Wrapped around all but those last few seconds of the game, the Wildcats’ defense delivered another gem that helped overshadow the blemishes of fumbles, penalties, and missed PAT attempts by the Rison team which improved to 3-0 for the first time since 2008. Meanwhile, the never-quit Chicot County eleven exited from the large assembly gathered to witness the history of a new field in the same location, carrying with them a 1-2 record.

Senior quarterback Spencer Trail directed Rison’s offense, gaining 130 yards on 17 carries, while throwing for 61 yards in completing 6 out of 7 passes and a touchdown. It was Trail’s 23-yard scamper to the Lake Village 11 that helped set up the Wildcats’ first TD, a 5-yard plunge by Malik Chavis that made it 6-0 with 4:32 gone in the game.

Moments later, after the Wildcats’ DJ Watson dumped Kilgore for a 7-yard loss to force a Lake Village punt, Trail hooked up with Devin Davis for a 24-yard pass completion to the Beavers’ 4. With 1:52 to go in the opening period, RoShawn Martin cracked the end zone from 3 yards out and it was... Click here to read full article
