One of Chantay Dyess’ responsibilities as a coach’s wife involves compiling stats each week to be listed on the MaxPreps website.

While doing the task last season, Dyess, who is married to Philadelphia football coach Teddy Dyess, came across the Touchdowns Against Cancer campaign to donate money to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

An oversight, however, prevented her from finalizing it last year.

“I guess I didn’t do it completely, last year,” she said.

This year, she made sure every box was checked. Philadelphia is one of two local schools participating in MaxPreps’ 2017 Touchdowns Against Cancer fundraiser, which begins this Friday. Newton County is also participating.

“It’s through MaxPreps, and you get sponsors,” she said. “I think I put a goal, let’s say, of 10 touchdowns. But they only do it for the three ball games in September.”

Dyess said MaxPrep’s fundraiser hits home for the Tornadoes, as receiver Takavius Bingham is all too familiar with the disease.

“When he was in kindergarten, he was diagnosed with cancer,” Dyess said of Bingham. “And I know there are some children here in Philadelphia, and I don’t know if they’re using St. Jude, but they’re using University of Mississippi Medical Center and they have cancer.”

The Tornadoes will play Quitman, Choctaw Central and Southeast Lauderdale during the three-game span of the Touchdowns Against Cancer fundraiser, and if the team’s previous performances serve as indicators, 10 touchdowns should easily be attainable. Dyess said she hopes the money raised helps those in need.

“I think my goal was to raise $1,000 dollars,” Dyess said. “You can pay as little or as much you want to pay. It doesn’t have to be $10.00 a touchdown, you can do a dollar, or, if you have the money and want to, you can donate to the program because it’s for a good cause.”
