VOLLEYBALL

Ashley 3, Hoggard 0 (25-21, 25-15, 26-24)

The Screaming Eagles bounced back well from Tuesday’s straight set loss at New Hanover, ending Hoggard’s 53-match Mideastern Conference winning streak.

“We had a chat with some of the captains after that match Tuesday for them to figure out what to do and they did some different stuff in practice as far as prep,” Ashley coach Larry Salefsky said. ”(Wednesday) night, they ate dinner dinner at one of the girls’ house and stayed there and did some team stuff.”

Ashley (4-3, 1-1) was the last MEC team to beat Hoggard. They won in five sets on Sept. 20, 2012.

“That speaks to the good job (coach Ron) Strickland does over there with those kids from Hoggard,” Salefsky said. “They lost some good kids last year and they’re still just as competitive as they’ve ever been.”

Salefsky was pleased with his team’s defensive effort Thursday night. Stats weren’t available, but he said outside hitters Katherine Boudreau and Trinity Rosales both finished with double-digit kills.

“We received the first serve and sided out,” Salefsky said. “It’s always nice when you can jump out and win that first point.

“Their outsides hit a few that skimmed through our block and they hit a couple good ones down the line we didn’t touch, but anything else that was deeper in the court or balls that we could get our hands on, the girls were ready.”

The Vikings (4-6, 1-1) led in the first and third sets, but were unable to put away their rivals. Freshman Carson Grace Toomer served the final two points and Sam Luscher put home the game-winning kill to seal the win.

Paige Corrigan had 12 kills and Kirby Smith finished with a double-double (10 kills and 10 digs) for Hoggard.
