There’s a reason Pulaski Academy is arguably one of the top football teams in the nation, and they proved it in Sand Springs’ season opener. Thanks to seven touchdowns from senior quarterback Layne Hatcher, Little Rock, Arkansas’ Pulaski Academy beat the Charles Page High School football team, 59-21, Friday, Sept. 1 at Memorial Stadium. Hatcher, a 6-foot-1, 185 pound senior, threw six touchdowns to four different receivers, and he added a rushing score. Hatcher also kicked three extra points and threw two conversion passes, accounting for 47 of his team’s 59 points. In the first quarter, Hatcher threw for a score and rushed for another, giving his team a 16-0 lead. Sand Springs got on the board with a 2-yard run from senior running back Payton Scott with 4:49 left in the first quarter, and they got a little help from Pulaski. The touchdown was set up by a kickoff return from Braden Millican on an onside kick. Millican took the ball down to the Pulaski 23-yard line, and Scott carried the ball seven times in the seven-play drive. Pulaski does not punt and they almost always onside kick. Hatcher then threw two more touchdown passes before the end of the quarter, giving the Bruins a 31-7 lead. In the first quarter, the Sandite defense got sacks from Jerry Lyons and Kris Edwards, and junior quarterback Caden Pennington’s first passes of the season was intercepted by Pulaski’s Brooks Walton. Pennington then settled down and started hitting his receivers. Millican and Luke Bratcher were his main targets. By halftime, Pulaski had a 38-7 lead and extended it to 52-7 in the third quarter with touchdown passes from Hatcher. With 1:13 left in the third, Sandite running back Ben Nortey got loose for an 81-yard touchdown run, and Scott added another in the fourth quarter. Scott scored on a 27-yard run, and kicker Jaden Wiser nailed his third extra point of the game. He was 3-3 on extra points in his first-ever high school game. Pulaski Jayden Kelley ended the game with an 8-yard run and the 59-21 Bruin win.
